Voice actor H. Jon Benjamin, who’s known for his roles on the animated TV shows “Archer” and “Bob’s Burgers,” is facing backlash for a recent tweet, which was seen by followers as racist.
“Quick idea for the name of a tea shop- ‘ooh me so horny, me love you oolong time tea shop,’” he tweeted on Saturday.
His “me so horny” joke, which was a famous line from Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film “Full Metal Jacket,” did not land well. People on social media accused Benjamin of peddling anti-Asian stereotypes.
“Really disappointing to hear this type of racist garbage from you,” tweeted one user. “I was a fan.”
“Ah, the Asian joke. The lowest of the low hanging fruits,” wrote another user. “Stick to burgers ‘Bob.'”
The 52-year-old actor quickly took down the tweet and apologized a few hours later.
“Sorry I offended many. I agree this ‘joke’ was lazy and incompetent and formulated quickly while making a cup of oolong tea,” he wrote. “The fact that it was a famous line in a movie does not give me license to make light of the big picture stereotyping of Vietnamese people and Asian Americans in general. I’m sorry I ever made that cup of tea. And thanks for making me realize this in quick order.”
